Question: Clueless about buying a diamond ring!?
(Posted by: MRS. CARTER HUH on 2010-02-28 21:13:15)
My father is looking to buy a diamond ring for my stepmother and asked me for help to pick out the ring. i of course accepted the challenge but neglected to tell him that i know absolutely NOTHING about diamonds! i was hoping someone could help me in understanding the decision process when it comes to diamonds! here& #039;s a little background: i& #039;m 20 years old and have never had any experience with diamonds AT ALL! my father and stepmom have been married for about 10 years and he has never once really done anything nice for her in this way, so i think it& #039;s a really wonderful idea. the ring is for no occasion at all. my stepmother isn& #039;t an extravagant woman but i& #039;m sure she& #039;ll love to show it off! i think my dad& #039;s looking to somewhere below $2000. so with all this in mind, any help as to what cut we should get? i was thinking maybe heart shaped? also, we want the ring to be beautiful and somewhat flashy. how many carats do you think? i also think it& #039;s best to go with the clearer diamond (d).... any ideas, comments, suggestions, or help would be greatly appreciated! thank you!! |

A heart shaped diamond sounds like a very sentimental touching shape, but over time she might get tired of this shape. Heart diamonds are not nearly as popular as round brilliants or princesses. With your Dad’s budget, you will want to stick with yellow or white gold. This will save you on the setting. The more diamonds you have on the side of the setting, the more expensive will be the setting. You will have to go for a small diamond if you want a fantastic cut. But if your step mom is not flashy then maybe something of quality rather than quality is the way to go. Make sure your diamond comes with a certification. The main labs to look at would be AGS or GIA labs. Check out a website pricescope.com for more information on what’s available on-line. |

I do not suggest u buy D color and VS up clarity diamond jewelery. the most important is the style of the ring; second, you could buy diamond ring, i think you could buy SI to VS ( clarity ), I-J, or H ( color ). make should be VG ( very good ). third, fancy cut ( like you said heart shape is one of them ) is less expensive than round diamonds. i suggest you buy fancy cut . meanwhile, heart shape is one of the best gift for women. i could not give u an idea what is the carat of diamonds will be. but, i think u can get a good price during new year holidays, u could get 50 to 60% off! be patient a little if your father & mom can wait! i m a jeweler from china. u r welcome to contact me if u have any questions about jewelry. |

There is a lot to know about diamonds, but you aren 't going to learn it all in a few minutes. You can do some research online - wikipedia has some information for a start. Your best bet is to go to a respected jeweler in your neighborhood. What you can probably help your step dad with is the style. There are lots of different styles and you might have an idea what your mom would like. The three most basic are solitaire (one relatively large diamond in a nice setting), three stone (symbolizing past, present and future), and anniversary ring style (several smaller diamond all the same size across the ring) |
