Has chipped. She just found a small chip (visible to naked eye) on the girdle (side) of the diamond. We have owned the stone for just over 30 days! It was not chipped when we got it (I examined it very closely under a loop several times) I did add a rider to my homeowners policy with State Auto and paid the premium for policy last month. I contacted the jeweler yesterday and he sounded somewhat shocked. he says if it is chipped he will give me paperwork I can show to my insurance company and he says they will give me the replacement value. I paid approximately 5k for the diamond in the setting from a well known wholesale jewelry who has been in business for over 25 yrs in minneapolis. I dont want to make a claim on my insurance that will affect my rating or cause increases in my rates. I feel like the jeweler is screwing me. My fiance is very careful with her ring and did not hit the ring on anything, she does not even wear the ring to work. What should i do? Will my insurance really pay, what if they won& #039;t. my fiance really wants the problem addressed, she just got the darn thing! |

Depending on the setting, a diamond definitely can chip. Sometimes the knock doesn 't even have to be firm, just in the right angle. If the diamond was of a slightly lower quality, there could have been an inclusion at that point which set up the chip. It would probably be a good idea for the jeweler to have a look at the ring and evaluate things. |

First off, go to another jeweler and get the diamond appraised to make sure that you weren 't ripped of with a fake. It is possible for a diamond to chip very unlikely but possible. Usually the jeweler should replace it but you have to set up an insurance plan with them from the beginning for that. Once you have had the ring checked you will probably have to go ahead and use the insurance that you do have on the ring. We are talking $5,000 here. So it is worth risking the rate increase i think. Maybe the increase won 't be as bad as you think. You gotta do what you gotta do. Of course if it is a fake you will probably have to go to court. I would get the paper work that he offered you before you do anything that way you have proof if you try to sue him of what you paid for it and everything. Hopefully the ring is real so you won 't have to deal with that anyway. Good luck! |
